5 Ways to Feather an Empty Nest

August 21, 2019 Published by

As kids head off to college this fall, parents will want to find new uses for the empty rooms in their Nashville TN homes. If your last kid has left and your nest is empty, why not go all out and give the rest of your home a fresh new look? After all, you won’t have teenagers eating pizza in the living room, painting their bedroom walls purple or roller skating in the hallway.

Here are some ways to refresh your home and make new use of those empty bedrooms:

  1. Give your family room an adult makeover. If you no longer need kid-proof, stain-hiding furniture, now is the time to spring for lighter colors, more delicate fabric or high-end pieces. While you’re at it, refresh the paint to give the room a whole new look.
  2. Install new flooring throughout the house. This is another great opportunity to completely change the style of your living spaces. Once sanded, hardwood floors can be stained to make them lighter or darker than before.
  3. Turn those empty bedrooms into craft space, a home office, guest room or luxurious walk-in closet. If you still need a room for visiting children, consider using a daybed or foldout sofa so the room can also be used for other purposes.
  4. An unused game room can make a great media room, home gym, library or man cave. A basement game room could become a wine cellar and bar.
  5. Don’t forget the yard! Take down that swing set and put in a fire pit, bocce lawn, garden or koi pond.

Capitol Homes was able to give us the look we wanted without exceeding our budget. Our friends who have built custom homes told us to expect to go over budget by 10 to 20 percent … I say that they should have chosen David Luecke and Capitol Homes. Capitol completed our new home under budget and gave us more than we expected.Todd Kornblit
